Now, if you’re anything like me and you’re lucky to leave the house with a swish of mascara in the morning, highlighter and blush are probably low on your priority list.. Well, Colour Contouring is the service that lets your hair do the contouring not your make up.

Contouring is a complete bespoke experience that uses light to draw certain parts of the face out while also using depth to disguise other parts of the face. Personally it’s a service I couldn't live without, after years of hearing ‘let’s lighten up around the face’ and wondering why my chubby cheeks just looked chubbier after my colour I now understand lightness around the face is not always the best option. If you have a round face and chubby cheeks, like myself, lightness around the face is a mortal sin… in actual fact we need depth around the face to draw the eye in.

Equally those with longer faces will need lightness through the middle, depth underneath and a little depth through the top. This will draw the middle part of the face out slightly and diminish the length by drawing the eye in above and below the chin.

Let’s look at some celebrities to prove this unbelievable theory!!

Kellie Osbourne

Kellie tends to have some depth around the mid section but lightness through the top of her hair. This is the perfect technique for a round face. Kellie also uses her hairstyle to contour the face by creating height at the root area which draws the eye upwards and elongates her face.

Lightness through the top to elongate the face shape. If Kellie had length we would also add lightness through the bottom section to elongate!

Depth through the sides to draw the eye in.

Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer is famous for her many beautiful hairstyles over the years, but in each and every one we can see how her clever colourists have used her hair to contour her face shape.

Jen has quite a square jaw which requires depth around the jawline to soften it, she is also a little narrow through the chin area which requires some lightness sitting around the chin to draw this out. Through the top she is a little square so we use depth around the corners of the face and lightness in behind to elongate the face.

Check out how it’s done:

Depth around the corners to soften but lightness in behind this to elongate.

Lightness around the chin area to draw this outwards slightly.

Depth coming from the behind section to soften the jaw line.

As hairdressers we have always consulted our clients focussing on skin and eye colour and not usually face shape; Colour Contouring is a great opportunity to ensure you walk away with the colour you have always wanted.

Ask us about Colour Contouring in the salon today :)

The Chair

XoXo
